Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,

That's where Blogger comes in. Weblogs are a rich source of links, which are
posted in a fast, timely manner. Not only that, many weblogs are readable in
RSS, or rich site summary, a standard syndication format that is easily
parsed and indexed by search engine spiders, the bots that search engines use
to crawl and index the Web.

"Web pages are hard to index without a standard structure," said Cleveland.
"But Google can easily index RSS feeds."

"Would that tempt some of you Raleighites out to a gathering, or discourage?
What could lead to better attendance at the Raleigh gatherings?"

The biggest problem that I have with after-work gatherings is ... that
they're after work :)! I seem to be able to make all of the parties, but
almost none of the after-work meetings.

The reason that I asked INWs in Raleigh/Cary to identify themselves is that
I thought that some of us could meet spontaneously-- whenever someone was
heading out to hear a band, watch a game, see a movie, (outdoor movies in
the summer-- Yes!), go to an opening-- whatever. I'm always more free on
weekends when I control my time, but there might also be weeknights when I
want to go out, and would like to do whatever I'm doing with people that I
share interests with. If we know which INWs might be available, then we can
meet whenever it works out.

Case in point, I'll probably want to do something tonight. Just getting out
to have a beer would be great. I live in Wimbledon (corner of Cary Parkway
and Kildaire Farms Road in Cary), and could easily be talked into meeting at
the MacGregor Ale House ... If any of you want to meet, please let me
know. For those of you I have not meet, here's a photo (small, but the only
one I have scanned...) Colleen

I've heard a rumor that our next Raleigh gathering might be at one of the
go-cart/putt-putt places, such as Adventure Landing. That will be in May.

Would that tempt some of you Raleighites out to a gathering, or discourage?
What could lead to better attendance at the Raleigh gatherings?

Meanwhile, I've been making it to none of the parties :-( Probably why we
haven't met.

Gatherings, parties and impromptu get togethers are all part of building
community, and that's what InterNetWorkers is about. The gatherings are
"official" and predictable, but the only real difference between the
"unofficial" parties and the gatherings is how they are announced. A gathering
announcement goes out to both lists -- inet-announce and the discussion
list -- and is announced on the web page, while the "unofficial" parties are
only announced by the party giver on the discussion list.

This is reflective of the nature of the lists. Inet-announce is announce-only
and heavily moderated, while the discussion list is free form.

I'd like to propose that we open inet-announce up a bit. We've set the
expectation that it will be low-volume, but I think that we could send out a
couple of additional notes a month without upsetting anyone. We can also make
room on the web site for "unofficial" announcements.

This goes along with the theory that the best networks are multi-headed.

If you have organized something you'd like for the entire INW realm to know
about, just drop the note to me for now and cc: this list. I can act as
moderator for now, though I would like to create some kind of policy so as to
reduce the risk of contention. If you'd like to be part of the process, let me
know.

And of course, if you don't want your party announcement to go to
inet-announce, then just don't ask.

I would like to discuss this idea further... I see possibilities for a neat
little community building web/email app of some sort. Don't worry, discussing
doesn't imply "promising to do." We can discuss organizational ideas without
fear of future haranguing.

My proposal above goes a little ways, I think, but I bet there is more that
can be done.

A lot of the success of the group is due to our use of Internet technologies
for community building purposes. However, we haven't done anything innovative
with the technologies in a while. That's a shame. Any suggestions are more
than welcome, and you can probably get the chance to implement and test your
ideas.

Colleen, thanks for your thoughts on this manner and taking the initiative to
better our community and community-building means.

Cheers!
