Serious work was accomplished here today! I got the garden done! There was a
raised bed already in the back yard that I decided to press into duty as my
veggie and herb garden this year, as I have not had time to take out the sod
from an area that will likely be my permanent garden. I pulled off all the
mulch from that bed in the back yard, pulled up the black plastic and all
the roots that were on top and underneath the plastic. I planted 7 tomato
plants (4 Rutgers, 1 Celebrity, and 2 Romas), 10 peppers (6 California
Wonder bells and 4 jalopenos), a variety of herb plants (sweet and purple
basils, English thyme, Greek oregano), a few brocolli plants, a few
marigolds for color, and 15 sweet potatoes on a hill (which meant a lot of
digging to create that). Then I re-mulched around all the plants and
watered. At least the weather cooperated and I didn't get slowed down by
thunderstorms. I was very glad to get the garden in. It is a very small
garden this year. But it is big enough with all the other projects I'll have
going. There are few things, though, that make me feel like I am settling
into a place as much as getting a garden planted.

I'm still milking my goat. I've not progressed to hard cheeses yet. But I've
made a couple varieties of soft cheeses and yogurt. I have a lot of frozen
milk for the off season. I recently bought another little doeling. This fall
I will get a buck. The dairy portion of my homestead is definitely going
well.

Lots of plans for the future. I want to build a set of compost bins. I want
to build a little hen house. I need to build a buck pen and a buck stall in
one of my sheds. And, I want to build a raised bed for strawberries (clearly
I won't be planting strawberries this spring, but I want to get the bed
built and ready). I need to do some more fencing. And I really need to clean
up some of the downed wood in the forest behind my house, as it is full of
wildfire fuel presently. Need to have my lane graded and graveled, and need
to run a water line out to the critter shed, and electric out to the hay
shed. It will all happen in due course, I hope.

Next year, if all goes as planned this year, and I have the area ready for
them, I hope to plant a few fruit trees. When I plant FRUIT trees, I will
really feel like I am settled into my homestead!

Happy Homesteading, All!

Gloria
