Thank you all for your interest. The strange behaviour is solved: network
card (driver).

I compared the time the packet was sent from client to server with the time
the packet was received by the server. The delay was sometimes more than 15
seconds on our local network! Since there are more clients connecting to the
server directly that are not delayed, I focused on the network subsystem.
I've tried a different network card, an old and reliable 3com card, instead
of the onboard RTL 8168/8111 card and now there is no delay. The problem is
in the driver of RTL 8168/8111 card on my openSuSE 10.2, I think. The
hardware compatibility list of openSuSE says that the driver was backported
from 2.6.19 kernel, it seems to still have issues to solve.
