As you probably know, FreeTDS is only waiting during that time. The
client is idle and the network is idle. Only the server is doing
anything. I can't think of anything the client could do that would delay
the arrival of the server's response.

I think it's an interesting problem. In your shoes I would focus my
attention on server resources. My favorite tool for Microsoft servers is
the Profiler.
