then this implies 2 things, I think...

1) that there is a new version of the RPC TDS protocol in SQL 2005.
2) that the server thinks we are using the new version, but in fact we
are still using the old version.

What do we have for tds version in freetds.conf ?

Hi Bill,

yepp! Nothing changed on the app itself. Only switched over to a
db-server running sql 2k5 instead of sql 2k. Databases also exactly the
same (detached from sql 2k, copied to the other machine and attached to
the sql sk5 server).
