Wow, is this ever weird. Just to double check, what says

$ file src/dblib/.libs/libsybdb.so.2.0

I hope it says it's a shared library. (!)

And yet that's the only thing it builds. Curiouser and curiouser. Is there
any way to get configure to answer "yes" to that test? (by experimentation,
I mean.)

Your log is very clear. The shared objects are built, but "ginstall" is
never called upon to move them into their proper home.

Could you peek at the top of one of those 0.53 *.la files, too, since you
have it handy? It should disclose what version of libtool as used. The
current one says:

# libsybdb.la - a libtool library file
# Generated by ltmain.sh - GNU libtool 1.4a (1.641.2.255 2001/05/22
10:39:30)

I can't see how this could be anything but libtool tomfoolery. Maybe this
weekend I'll summon the intestinal fortitude to scrape the web for
suggestions.
