Hi,

...ok, looks like my 'caveat' may have been a little rash ;)

...thnx for the info Seth. I didn't do anything simple like download the
jar file admittadly...I got the source and tried building it. Using JSDK2
the build failed. Using JDK1.1.8B it sailed through. Although I will own
up, I didn't look too heavily into why the JSDK2 failed, I just remembered
the docs mentioning stuff not being implemented in 2.x. and since I had
JDK1.1.x at hand, used it instead.

Next time I'll base my caveat on more thorough evidence. Pls excuse the
mis-information %(

Rgds,

Steve Huckle

I'm using the freeTDS JDBC with 1.3 JDK and have no problems?
I've never build the .Jar files I just downloaded them and they worked fine.
The readme says that you can compile as JDBC 1.x or 2.x.
I'm fine with 1.x as 2.x even the non free (type 4) commercial JDBC Drivers
do not implement all the 2.x calls.

Let me know what you find out about the code. If you have managed to compile
the lastest java version 0.2 I think. Could you try the -deprecated flag to
see if there are any old java call still in the code line. I don't think
there are but wuold value your comment.

Heh,

Gave up with DBD::Sybase and sybperl using freetds on a Solaris 7 Sparc in
the end. Didn't feel right, what with core dumps and the like.

BUT, I have successfully approached things from a slightly different angle.
After a week or so of banging my head against a large brick wall with Perl,
I gave java a go by using freetds_jdbc instead, and thereafter I have
successfully read, written, dropped, created...in fact all things MS SQL
Server 7.0 from a Solaris 7 Sparc platform. Thnx freetds guys ;) In fact,
java is a nice solution, 'cause the exception handling and stacktraces allow
you to see exactly what is going on from the application side without
needing to trawl through dbase logs......useful when you don't have access
to them ;)

fyi though, one tiny caveat. JSDK2 doesn't work with freetds_jdbc (I think
it says as much in the docs), so you'll have to go get jdk1.1.x. Do that
quick since Sun are decommissioning that soon apparently. Freetds
guys...any chance of implementing JSDK2?

...so my advice for anyone looking to talk to SQL Server from a Sparc
Solaris platform using freetds? You guessed it....for the moment, go down
the java route IMHO.

Rgds,

Steve Huckle

I don't know about writes , but we are running production with Solaris 7
connecting to MSSQL 7 using freeTDS 0.51 ( with DBD::Sybase. I used gcc
2.95.2 . freeTDS is much easier to use than Sybase ct lib.

I am not sure we have tested with writes , but I am getting ready to test
that this week for another application .

DBD::sybase has to be re-installed after setting SYBASE env variable to
freeTDS path. But I am sure you know that already..
