Citizen Pruner Training Series

(3) Monday, April 10, 17 & 24, 7-8:30pm

@ Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY

Learn about pruning trees and shrubs – for your own interest, or to become a volunteer with the Citizen Pruners, an enthusiastic group that helps take care of trees and shrubs in the City of Ithaca!

Classes are FREE and open to the public with no obligation to volunteer, however, anyone interested in becoming a Citizen Pruner volunteer is encouraged to attend.  Skills you learn in the classes are reinforced as you work with other volunteers who love to prune and learn about trees.  It’s a great way to volunteer without going to meetings, and to make new friends who share your interests! Classes will be held on (3) Mondays in April:

·         Monday, April 10, 7:00-8:30pm – Dr. Nina Bassuk, Director of the Cornell Urban Horticulture Institute, will talk about city street trees and the conditions they must endure.  Lessons are relevant to challenging sites you may have in your yard and you will learn how to prepare sites for proper tree and shrub landscape plantings.

·         Monday, April 17, 7:00-8:30pm  –taught by Monika Roth, Ag Team Leader with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.  This session focuses on deciduous and evergreen shrubs and the basics of how to prune them, including cutting them to the ground to rejuvenate them.

·         Monday, April 24, 7:00-8:30pm -- this class on Tree pruning will be taught by Jeanne Grace, City of Ithaca Forester and Keith Vanderhye, who is the owner of Limbwalker tree care company.  Information on pruning young trees for form and structure and pruning of mature tree care for safety and to promote a longer life will be discussed by these two experts.

All classes will be held at CCE-Tompkins, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY.  Sign up for one or all three. To register, email mjc72 AT cornell.edu.  There is no fee to attend these classes, however, donations of $5-$10/person help to support our programs and are most welcome!
