I'll offer one more teaser here, and again, as you'd
probably guess by now, the issue hinges on terminology
and translation. The authors say that "pagans" (I Cor
12:2) is as much a mistranslation in the NT as "Jews"
-- both categories were non-existent at this time --
and that the word ETHNE refers in this case not to
ancestry but social standing. It describes Corinthian
members when they were still outsiders to the
Christian movement: "Like other Israelites resident
among a non-Israelite majority, they too had recourse
to local deities whose presence was mediated by mute
images." (114) (Malina and Pilch discuss the "pagan"
translation at more length in commenting on I Cor
5:1.)

I hope to have a comprehensive review of the book on
list within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, don't
wait another day to place your order. Even if the idea
of Paul evangelizing Israelites exclusively is hard to
swallow, most of the commentary is extremely helpful
in a way most Pauline commentaries are not.
