Concerning Paul's "missionary journeys," John Townsend deals with the
origin of this concept in an article that appeared in SBL Seminar Papers
1985 ("Missionary Journeys in Acts and European Missionary Societies,"
433-37). He makes the (very interesting) observation that such an idea
does not appear until the middle of the 18th century (specifically, in
J. A. Bengel, Gnomon Novi Testamenti). He argues that the concept was
formed under the influence of the missionary movements that came to the
fore in 18th and 19th century Europe, as commentators read mission
practices of their own day into the Acts account.
