I appreciate the discussion of the relation of 1 Cor. 8--10 to Rom. 14
which I seem to have started. Perhaps, however, I was not as clear as I
should have been. When I said that Paul liked the argument he had
created in 1 Cor. 8--10 so much that he reused it in Rom. 14, I meant
just that: he reused the line of argument. Of course the situation is
different. Paul's letters are parts of conversations that he was
having with various of his churches. The Corinthian situation is not
the same as the Romans' (to the extent that he knew the latter).
I find it to be a rule that, while Paul frequently reuses material
from letter to letter, he never applies the reused material in the same
way. I.e., one should not expect consistency.
Best wishes! -- John Hurd
