Can anyone provide me with a quick and dirty rundown on the approaches

Jeffrey.
There is a book by Thomas Schmeller (Paulus und die Diatribe. Eine
vergleichende Stilinterpretation. Munich 1987) with a section on Bultmann's
and Stowers' views. A good critique, to my mind. Schmeller criticizes Stowers
view for being too narrow in his limitation of diatribe to the classroom
setting. Even the market place where the travelling preachers would deliver
their 'wisdom' by means of diatribe, constitutes a teaching situation. The
only constistent trait of the diatribe texts analyzed by Stowers is, acc to
Schmeller, their popular tendency (Schmeller 20f, 46f, 52).
