Gavin, some participants of the first workshop expressed the wish to be in an environment with less distractions so that participants can focus more on the issues discussed at the workshop rather than having ten other things going on in parallel, plus meetings, reporters, etc. So, it was decided already at the last iSummit to try to organize a research event that can stand on its own two feet (though I wouldn't be too surprised if someone would take the initiative to have a CC- related informal meeting on the side of the research event).

In retrospect we can view last year's iSummit as an incubator of the research event, with the latter taking shape as an independent event this year. Of course we will keep looking for synergies and any possibilities to co-host events in the future so as to minimize the amount of global travel that we do each year. I do not have further information on the iSummit at this point and I do not know whether it will take place this year and in what form. But rest assured that I'll be the first to try to combine events whenever possible as travel from Singapore can be quite expensive and time-consuming!

As for iSummit, I am not sure what the planning is for it this year and if there will be one

Out of curiosity (from someone who wasn't able to attend last year), is
there a reason the workshop isn't again going to be scheduled with the
iSummit?

Hello everyone, in fact, there are fresh news on the conference front,
I just got an email a couple of days ago that the conference can be
held at Stanford in early August. The dates that were given to me were
Aug 6-8, but need to double check that first as it was initially
planned to have it on a weekend, Sunday included, but Aug 6-8 is Thu-
Sat. In any case, this took a while because it required the
coordination of a few parties, mostly people at the Stanford Center
for Internet and Society who will provide some logistic support and
Lessig himself who wanted to make sure he has time to attend. One can
imagine given his busy schedule that this was not so easy to achieve.

So, those of us who are interested in organizing the conference can
now work on the CFP, which can build on the old one, available still
here: http://commonsresearch.wikidot.com/call

Perhaps a couple of you, say for example Juan Carlos and Prodromos (as
you guys have shown a strong interest during and after the workshop
last year), as well as Larry (who will be hosting the conference so
should be kept informed) can work with me to produce a first draft of
a revised CFP and then circulate it on this list for more feedback? Of
course all are welcome to provide inputs, I'm just thinking about how
to stage this so as to be more efficient and get it out quicker - last
year the amount of emails I sent around was enormous and I don't have
that kind of bandwidth this year - which is fine I think because we've
already been through the process once, so this time it should be easier.

Can you let me have a first go at the revised CFP this week and then
share with you?

The last post just awakened this thought and Christopher Adams just
reminded me about this list and the upcoming conference :)

Giorgos and other colleagues, what is the latest on the Commons
Research
project and conference?

I should check in as well as what is happening with the Creative
Commons
Metrics project. Has anyone done anything with this data?
