People might be interested in this article - provides a summary and analysis of a number of studies looking at the level of citation of open access research papers.
 
It does find a positive correlation between open access and citation; but it doesn't conclude that this is causal.
 
Rather, it concludes that "the overriding determinant of lifetime citations of an article is the quality, importance, and relevance of the work reported in the article."
