<minor rant>
Anyone who knows the research we've been doing for the last several years knows that my group and I are all about informal learning. Every funded research project we have going right now is significantly, if not completely, concerned with informal learning targeting underserved populations. The name of the group is "Open Sustainable Learning Opportunity"for goodness sake. I want informal learning to be available via the license as much if not more than anyone else on the list. Personal attacks that accuse me of promoting "class victimization" are either severely uninformed or simply dishonest. I wish we could get on with the business of the list. For example,

Survey respondents said they thought an educational use license would give them rights to make only educational and research related uses of materials, but that these uses need not be restricted to those carried out in formal educational settings (thanks to Stephen for helping me see this more clearly). I believe that the most productive thing for us to do, as list members, is to draft language that expresses a restricion on use to educational and research purposes without invoking the notion of a formal educational institution. As much as members of this list enjoy writing, I would think we could get some excellent drafts laid on the table in fairly short order. =)

Let's take a week and see how many draft clauses we can gather together. Next Thursday we'll start discussing their relavtive merits. I'll try to make sure that one of lawyers CC has so graciously donated to our cause is listening in.

If you believe there is something more productive we could be doing than drafting this language (e.g., doing the survey again), let's hear it.

David
