A new project at the Net Culture Lab is under way which aims to
provide commercial opportunities to Musicians using a CC licensed
framework.

*What is needed: *
Web developers - probably PHP
familiar with CChost http://wiki.creativecommons.org/CcHost
flash developers
General CMS backend administration
some knowledge of music licensing a plus
Viral Marketing Gurus

*Project*: *Notethrower* (working project name)

*Abstract:*
Develop an online collaboration platform for musicians to work together on
music for Film and TV placement deals.  Efficiently connect commercial
entities and allow the ability to purchase various publishing rights.
Profits will be distributed based on a pre-agreed contract between all
contributing artists, commercial entities and Website.

*Idea*
There is an ever-increasing range of user-produced creative content on the
web.  Music and its changing industry is at the heart of this growing
market.  Amateur and professional musicians are finding it easier to promote
their content without the aid of traditional publishing companies and record
labels.  Often times, artists are unaware of potential licensing
opportunities for commercial profit, and simply release their music for
free. Music for Film/TV is a very lucrative market, however, it is
inefficient with regards to the ability of today's web technologies.  This
project aims to connect musicians together and work collaboratively on music
to be used in Film/TV placement.  It will take advantage of open source
software, but will require some additional development.  CCHost will provide
the initial collaborative platform for musicians.  The second component will
provide a licensing mechanism similar to
how magnatune licenses music - for example:

http://www.magnatune.com/artists/albums/rossi-demarzi/

The goal is to achieve something similar to
http://soundtrack.pumpaudio.com/

Unique approaches and components to Notethrower will later be discussed
in detail.

The collaboration portal will serve two main purposes.
One purpose is to provide a way for musicians to upload and download
selected "pieces" of unfinished "songs" and produce a final work.  The
progression of versions and who contributed will be tracked within the
platform.  Final pieces will be offered to Film/TV companies to use and
license for variable fees depending on the use.  This should be an automated
process as well, and is the 2nd main aspect of the site.

The goal of this project is to develop a proof of concept business model.
Collaborative music communities already exist and flourish, ccmixter.org.
but without a simple way for artists to provide their work for commercial
use.  Services also exist to allow Film and TV companies to select music
from a database and license it for their use.
This project will offer its services for free to all contributing artists.
Legal agreements concerning profits from licensed material will be active
before collaborations take place.  This can be done through the use of CC
and CC plus licensing.
