  • Subject: [BL] XF86Config for S3 Savage/IX video?
  • Date: Fri, 5 Mar 2010 03:06:09 +0000

Trying to get X working in Basic Linux using the default graphics on
an old IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop.
Any good pointers for this in adiition-to the below ?
Has a built-in S3 Savage/IX video chipset.
Windows 98 FE recognizes this as an S3 Graphics Savage/IX SSVID=1014;
HW ver 017.
Win98-specific drivers for this are S3_7.DRV and S3VDD7.VXD; able to
get excellent 16bit/32bit colors at 1024x768 resolution.
So far, have used Basic Linux 3.50 with both Slack4.0's svga and s3
xservers alternatively loaded. Result: xf86config continues to create
broken/"fatal" XF86Config files regardless of which xserver is used.
Latest 'startx' error gives "S3: Unknown S3 chipset: chip_id = 0x8c12
rev 11"

Any more good links or direction for setting this S3 graphics video
card up in BL3-50 ??
Open to using another xserver here.
Also, upon request, can gladly provide current XF86Config and other
related pkgs/mods loaded..
Thanks in advance for some good pointers.
