Is it complete? Or does it expect the as assembler
to be in Linux? Most LInux installations have as
by default. Mini-distributions (like BL3) usually
do not have it.

To install as (and other tools required for compiling
in Linux), use the pkg command to install the binutils.tgz
package from the slakware/d1 directory of Slackware 4.0.
