It sounds like you need to assign an IP to XP (since automatic won't work as it doesn't sound like there's a dhcp server). Use 192.168.1.1 (netmask 255.255.255.0) for XP and 192.168.1.2 (netmask 255.255.255.0) for linux.

Once you do that and share the folder on XP I'm sure smbclient will work fine for you.

Has anyone used BL with ANY kernel to access NTFS?
with that you would need a customized kernel i guess, i don't think by
default linux kernels come with ntfs support; mine actually has ntfs
(readonly) access but i'm not sure if mine kernels 2.2.26 or 2.4.31
would work on your motherboard; on the other hand you could just
recompile the source, i think 2.2.16 kernel source has an option for
ntfs

Itwould be nice to have a 2-floppy BL that supports both copying files from an ntfs file system and usb-storage so as to transfer photos directly from a USB camera or memory card reader, and 2.2.16 does not do USB storage, but we could first copy to hard drive with XP andthen networkwith an older ntfs-capable BL.

I tried running a network setup wizard, set XP to share files and printers, and it still complains about a bad connection. it obviously sees the connection (it sets itself to 10 MBit/sec instead of 100MBit/sec, to match my pcmcia card) but tells me the cable is not plugged in. Perhaps it was being discarded by the local school system because of a bad network port, not just the floppy drive with a piece of floppy disk stuck in it.

Can anyone on this list try networking between BL and XP and if it works, report the details?

We have a neighbor who uses Windows and linux. I will ask him for help when we get back from our trip.

The simplest solution to taking digital photos on a trip is a larger memory card so you do not need to download.
