Yes, it will certainly untar the package. But it
will all go into a new sub-directory with a long
name (in the top directory of the filesystem).

I doubt it. There is nothing usual about it.
The Slackware installation script is called
doinst.sh and it goes into a special directory.
I would be *very* surprised if installpkg
executed install.sh
