One may analyze compound Hebrew words with no need to have recourse to
abstract grammatical terminology. Hebrew is a simple and transparent
language. The word you bring from Genesis 12:3 is decomposed thus:
מברכיך=מ+ברך+היא+אכה where the initial מ, M, is essentially מי, MI, ‘he
who’. Next is the root ברך. In its detached form the still next personal
pronoun היא, HI, means specifically ‘she’. As an affix it reverts to its
original universal nature and stands here for the many well-wishers. The
closing personal pronoun אכה, AXA, is an obsolete variant of אתה, ATA, ‘you’
singular. Its plural version is אכם, AXEM, for אתם, ATEM, as in the word
שלכם=של+אכם, $EL+AXEM, ‘yours’. The next word in this verse is ומקללך
referring to a single detractor. Addition of Yod turns it into ומקלליך ‘and
your detractors’.

Hi All,

In Genesis 12:3, M:BFR:KEYKA, appears to be often translated as "those who

bless you".

However, all I see is a participle form of BRK with a possessive 2ms suffix.

What is the correct parsing and why is it translated as "those who bless

you"?

Thanks,

Chris Gummer.
