Another modern example of this is "The Voyage to Lourdes" by Alexis Carrel
(1873-1944) for the details see Stanley L. Jaki's article

Carrel didn't publish this in his lifetime and just to keep himself
protected in case the manuscript got out of his hands he wrote it as
fiction.

Of course many people have, for all sorts of reasons, written works of apparent fiction which are in fact largely autobiographical, or biographical of others. Indeed, Clay, you just did a bit of that, on another list!
