actually, gadel is probably not a rogue veqatal, but ve+participle.

"halox ve+inf absolute" is a regular idiom for "more and more ..." that
also parallels "particple + holex" (cf. yonah 1.12) for the same "more and
more" idea. It appears that the author has mixed these two idioms here:
halox [infinitive absolute] plus the participle from the "participle +
holex" idiom.

if you want, you can even call gadel a dialectical by-form for the
infinitive absolute
(see david qimHi, 12th century).
[for an ancient contrary view, ibn ezra takes this as veqatal, apparently
content with the open-endedness of the past habitual "was getting bigger"
(i.e. aspectually the same as yiqtol)].
myself, i read as participle, recognizing that a dialectical inf. absolute
would mean the same thing anyway.
