I got some of their teeny little seedlings I think back in '05 just in time
for years of drought. The weird thing about them is that they hardly grow.
I've got European seedlings and F2's of Euro x tree hazel planted more
recently and they all seem to be growing much faster than the Badgersett
seedlings. Year after year I keep waiting for them to get their roots going
and start growing fast. Even the '05 blueberry plants that languished for
years finally put on a growth spurt in wet '09. I know the hazels can't
complain about lack of symbiotic fungi because there are so many wild ones
on the property. And certainly they've had more assistance from me (water
and fertilizer) than the wild plants, but they are still small and wimpy.
Anyone with info on them? I looked and looked back before I ordered mine
and couldn't find anyone online talking about them, which I thought didn't
bode too well. Maybe no one was talking about them because they were still
waiting for theirs to grow too.
I got some scions of hazels from Corvallis, and then happened to read about
how they won't take unless temps are up in the 60's. So they've sat in the
fridge while I grafted the other stuff first. I have plenty of nice big
wild hazels to graft onto, so am really hoping that they'll grow fast and
start bearing soon. Donna
