It is not an apple I have heard of; looked in the National Apple
Register of the UK which lists apples grown here between 1853 and 1968.
It does not detail Summer Scarlet / Scarlet Summer. I have looked in a
nursery catalogue of 1832 and nothing there either.
On the back of the limited description at maple valley orchards site...
In Robert Hogg's The Fruit Manual of 1884 he does list Scarlet Queening
and Summer Queening as synonyms for Crimson Quoining. - which reads:-
" Fruit, medium sized, two inches and a half wide, and two inches and
three-quarters high, conical and angular, sometimes distinctly five
sided, widest in the middle , and narrowing ti the base and apex. Skin,
dull red, streaked with darker red where exposed to the sun, and
greenish yellow, with a few faint streaks of pale red, on the shaded
side.Eye open, with long reflexed, divergent segments, set in a narrow
and predominantly ribbed basin. Stamens, marginal; tube, deep,
funnel-shaped. Stalk over half an inch long, inserted into a deep and
angular cavity. Flesh white, with a greenish tinge, tender, juicy and
with a pleasant brisk flavour. Cells, roundish obvate; axile.
A second rate apple, suitable either for the dessert or kitchen use; in
season from December till march."
