I've seen spots in San Joaquin Valley fields where nothing grew that
contained (what we believed to be) toxic amounts of Sodium Sulfate.
Another possibility might be spots where used motor oil was dumped. In
such spots, soil bacteria break down the contaminant around the edges and,
every year, the spot becomes smaller.
It would help to know the history of your land before you owned it.
