Alan:
I used an auger 11 years ago when I established an orchard in clay soil. Can't recall the diameter, but I noticed the auger seemed to leave the clay subsoil on the outside of the hole glazed. I did my best to scratch that out with a digging iron and shovel so the roots would be able to grow out beyond the hole diameter. I can't say how much it helped but I don't think the glazing helps.
