I visited Gene's mini orchard about four years ago
and wrote a story about him for Old Farmer's Almanac. I was also bitten by
the bug. I got my trees custom-grafted on to Bud 9 from a couple of
NAFEX listserv members who sell apple trees. Mine have been in the ground
for two seasons (were planted in 2004) and all have fruiting spurs. I
expect apples this year. I also planted a Pixie Crunch on M111 stock in
2004 and had apples last fall. Of course, this tree is bigger, but it's
easily manageable with pruning and training. I chose Bud 9, because I live
in Zone 4b-5a on the side of a glacier moraine where cold air drains down.
I needed the cold-hardiness. Gene lives in a sheltered area in comparison
to where I garden 80 miles to west of him. He is close to the moderating
effects of Lake Michigan and in a very urban setting with lots of concrete and
structures around to modify his climate. Hope some of this helps.
