It's also a citrus, Ctrus medica. Two plants with the same name. Buddha's
hand is a very interesting variety, worth growing just for the look of the
fruit. The rind of either can be candied and used in fruitcakes, puddings,
and confections. The one you would find candied in the stores is the Citrus
one. Anything labeled "candied citron" is the citrus. By FDA regulation,
the melon citrus must be labeled as a candied watermelon. That's why there
was no further info on the label: 'citron' by itself means the citrus.
'Citron melon' or 'Citron watermelon' is the melon. More info:
Yes, the melon rind has a little lemony tartness. It is only used candied
or pickled; the citron melon is considered inedible fresh.

I have a question about "citron".
I have a recipe for a "white fruitcake" in one of my "Southern"
cookbooks that calls for citron, finely chopped. Until recently I
thought that citron was a citrus fruit and that was that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citron
Then in a seed catalogue I read a description of a melon variety that
says the melon is "used to make preserves and "sweetmeats" that are
added to fruitcakes, cookies and puddings." http://www.seedsavers.org/prodinfo.asp?number=1240(OG)
P.S. Is either melon or citrus something that would grow well here in
the mountains of North Carolina?
