To my knowledge, Salal berry is Gaultheria Shallon which is native to
Northern California and points North whereas Gaultheria Procumbens is the
only Gaultheria spp. to thrive in zone 3. If you possess information to the
contrary, I've sincerely love to learn it. We'd love to make Salal jelly
but would it grow in Minnesota? We grow 98% of the fruits in our
jams/jellies and harvest the balance from the wilds locally. To date, we
have 21 kinds of jams, jellies and butters (plus no-sugar varieties), that
cannot be found at the grocery store, and more are being planned.

You must be planning on using it for jelly or the like. The seeds in
Gaylussacia are large enough to be objectionable, especially compared
to blueberries. I grew some once and decided they weren't worth it for
anything that wasn't processed to remove the seeds. Salal was more
interesting as a wild berry and had small seeds like a blueberry.
