There have been many suggestions here about apple bagging and all have
been appreciated. I'd like to add one more.
Beginning this season, some of us in Western Cascade Fruit Society will
experiment by using a 4" x 6" 2 mil. poly bag with a cotton drawstring.
One of our chapters is about to order these bags in quantity making the
cost less than 6 cents each, which is less than the Japanese bag. The
drawstring bags don't need to be removed before harvest in order for the
apple to color up and you will clearly be able to see the fruit through
the bag. We're hoping the drawstring concept will save time and energy.
Depending on the size of the cultivar, the apples are expected to grow
and stretch the bag, forming a tight enclosure. The harvested apples
can then be refrigerated in the bags which will also extend their
storage life. We expect this to work on pears as well. Mark Lee, a
member of our Seattle chapter, has used poly sandwich bags with success.
These small bags with a drawstring may be our chapter's answer.
