This is in reply to severalposts of this thread:
I am in Zone 5 and have a number of gooseberries, none are ripening at this
time. The usual ripening dates for most gooseberries here is about the first
week of July. This year I expect that most will be at least a week to ten days
later.
Re Pixwell:
Should be named "grows well", the berries are a bit easier to pick
than most gooseberries but the quality is not very good. They are better than no
gooseberries at all. My feeling is that they almost have to be picked
under-ripe. If they are fully ripe they are just sweet mush, there is no
character to the flavor if they are ripe. I pick Pixwell (if I pick them at all)
when they are just turning color, they are a bit tart but make pretty good pie,
jam and wine at that stage.
Poormaan is a much better cultivar but is more susceptible to mildew. The
berries can be allowed to ripen fully (til soft) and still have good flavor.
They probably produce about 3/4 the crop that pixwell does.
