For a zonally different perspective... I got a Luscious tree over 10 years
ago from Burpee. I fruited it out in my
Zone7 orchard in N. Georgia. I was interested in it because it was described
as FB resistant and good
tasting. Well, I can tell you that both are somewhat true. That original
tree is still there even though that part
of the country has the most intense fireblight pressure of anywhere. It has
lost some ground to FB however,
more so than several other cultivars, so it ain't the greatest in FB
resistance. Also, I have gotten many crops
from it and it is definitely a productive tree, and the fruit is good, but
not my favorite. It is not even close to
Warren, Magness or Harrow Delight in quality. In my opinion it is about on
the level as Spalding, but the fruit
is much smaller. It lacks intense flavor, but the texture is quite good.
Leaf spot resistance is also mediocre.
I'm keeping it around for now, but when more pears of Warren quality and
health come along, Luscious will
not remain.
