Del,
There are several Pseudomonas species that have been reported to cause
blight-like symptoms on plants. It
is unlikely that those aspen trees are infected with Erwinia amylovora
(fireblight). Not much specific testing of
species outside of Rosaceae has been done, but poplar (the closest aspen
relative that I've seen tested)
was shown to not be a host. However, a blight is a pathogen on a wide
variety of genera and species within
Rosaceae and a few instances of infection of non-Rosaceous plants have been
reported. An excellent
reference on this disgusting disease is:"Fireblight" USDA Handbook #510 by
Tom Van der Zwet and Harry
Keil.
Natural hosts include hawthorn, crabapples and mountainash.
