Hello,
In California, if you are called out, it is voluntary that you
respond as it is voluntary that your employer let you off for it. In our
group, we have had a few employers that would pay their employees while they
were on a SAR callout. Those were rare. Most of the SAR member have
employers that would allow their employees to respond and miss the work
without pay provided they could get by without them. Many of our members
are self employed and will respond at the drop of a hat. We had one that
would quit his job when we would call him out and find another after the
callout was over. There are no laws in
California mandating employers let you respond for a SAR callout
as they are with the National Guard or military reserves.
