I've been enjoying all the MSAR posts recently and expecting someone to
mention the cowboy shaped work helmets. Here's a source with three colors
and an optional chin strap.
I have one that meets FEMA specs and its comfortable enough (but nothing
like your favorite Stetson of course). I wore mine at a FEMA rock pile K9
eval years ago. Of course it freaked out all the conservative SAR K9 folks,
but it was legal. I might not have used it in confined rubble piles if I had
continued with FEMA work. Although the brim would sure have given some of
the Katrina responders some sun protection.

Yeah, me too. But in order to get more folks to wear them a hat over is
a great thing. Just have to find one that looks decent. For me the thing
I miss the most about a wide brimmed hat is protection- from sun, rain,
and falling debris (twigs, leaves, etc) I still haven't foudn the right
combo but I wear my helmet not a hat!
