Thanks for the group info, Jeanne, I'll check them out.
I do like Hughesnet-no problems so far. I haven't hit the speed bump
and been slowed. I never go to the Hughesnet home page because their
site is IE and doesn't like my Firefox browser. I also think their
website is a pain in the butt to navigate, even with IE. In light of
this, we downloaded the Networx program and use that as a guide if we
are curious and feel the need to track our download quantity. The
restriction is that you need to stay under 200 Megabytes of total
download quantity in any 24 hour period. We've come close before, but
haven't hit that yet. I don't suppose it would be a big deal if we ever
do as it is just a 'speed bump', and threatens to slow you back down to
'near dialup speeds' for a 24 hour period. Now mind you, their 'dialup
speeds', 50-70 kbps, are still several times faster than the 12-19 kbps
that I was connecting with through Bellsouth.
To justify the cost, we totally revamped our phone service through
Bellsouth/AT&T. I changed residential and long distance plans, and of
course dropped the dialup charges, an outrageous $23/month plus tax.
It is still an overall increase in payables, but only by about $15,
which is justified, IMO, by the increased speed and lack of frustration
and time saved.
I did have an employer paid cell phone which also helped keep my home
phone costs down, but no more, so I have to be careful about my phone
calls now. Most of my friends and family kept their Atlanta based cell
phone numbers when they moved here, and with my new plan(s) that's a
long distance call for me. It could add up quickly, so I have to keep
reminding people that it is long distance for me, a concept that many
people have forgotten. It used to be that folks could not relate to my
dialup speeds, now, they don't relate to 'long distance' charges. It's
always something...<g>
