Butternut doesn't cross with Acorn? Will either cross with cukes?
I can never remember.
It doesn't. Acorn squash is 'cucurbita pepo' and butternut is 'cucurbita mixta' and they can't cross.
Hubbard squashes are 'cucurbita maxima' and won't cross with either.
Now here's the nicely confusing part. Most summer squashes including zucchini are C. Pepo and will cross with acorn squashes. What passes for pumpkins are sometimes C. Pepo, sometimes C. Mixta, and sometimes C. Maxima and will cross within their species.
Most cushaws are C. Argyrosperma which means "silver seed" but some are C. Moschata.
