Gosh, that's cold. Lynn. Good luck with the pipes; 'sounds like you made a smart preventitive move heating up the basement.It's standard operating procedure in the winter. When it gets below 20, I drain the water in the barn. If it gets to zero, I make sure there's a little heat in the basement. Hauling wood, shoveling snow, stoking the stove, opening and closing the window quilts...the rhythm of life. Part of the changing seasons. Some seasons last a little too long, but I love them all.
