Government regulation is a poor substitute for church and family.

Ah, now we are getting to it. Family and community, not always but
often in the form of church, have been the traditional support system.
It is true that the poor will always be with us and it is true that in
times past the poor were with us. Modern America has evolved with
government first in the wings, then beside us, now center stage. The
worst of it is both parents having to work and the weaker family that
results. That has been compounded with job transfers taken to
locations far from support systems.
Rising gas prices may well exert an influence that helps to lead us
back to what was better.
Meanwhile, GWB has poisoned the water. McCain, a confused man
attempting to follow a man who is in over his head, has no chance. The
traditional small-government party will take years to regroup. So I
will cheer myself with the balance that comes from throwing out the
incumbent--in this case the incumbent party--and bringing in the new.
Keeping the pendulum nearest the center is the best we can do until
rising pain creates better thinking.
