"When in doubt toss it out" is my motto. I'd toss it as I never want
to go through that again... Never.
Yeah, I tossed it, too. Here is an interesting thing: the top was pushed up
before I opened it. After I unsealed it and we both ate quite a bit of it,
I put the plastic lid back on and put the package back into the fridge. It
sat there a couple days and did not bulge. Now, two possibilities occur: 1)
With the inner seal removed, any continuing gas buildup can escape; 2) the
gas production somehow is natural to these ingredients but takes several
days to accumulate enough to push the top up:
chopped Roma tomatoes
olive oil
Balsamic vinegar
basil
salt
garlic
sugar
black pepper
I lean toward believing that #1 is the correct answer. Next time I am in
Trader Joe's, where I buy the stuff, I will talk to the managers. It is a
big company and I would expect they are not interested in lawsuits, so
don't produce stuff that kills people. The Bruschetta Sauce package has
their company name and address; it is a proprietary product.
