You could connect to the machine "heedlessly" and control through programs
like VNC or Timbuktu (the category is called remote access)but I am unaware
of a laptop that would let you use it's built in screen as a monitor,
although it would be a good idea.

Yep. I assume you have those items. Unless you have always worked on a
laptop. I wonder if one could use a laptop screen?
