You notice that for the most part our socialist highway system doesn't
pave the road right up to our front doors when we choose to live in the
boonies. Same is true of social medicine programs.
Roads are a good analogy for how other social systems might work best. The
U.S. Department of Transportation coordinates and implements the national
system of roads across the country through the various states, the states
add their parts connecting the counties, and then the counties add their
parts connecting to homes. As the road comes closer to home there is more
local control and cost. Each entity does what works best to make the whole
most effective. Imagine if each homeowner built just their part of the
system. Imagine no national or state coordination; we would have a
hodge-podge of meandering dirt roads which might be lovely for sight-seeing
but would ill-serve the needs of society. A road system may be socialism at
its vital level.
