Hi Yitzhak,
I've had a bit of time to think about this now and over the weekend one very
obvious explanation struck me. If YM and M endings are equivalent then why
spend the extra time in an inscription doing a superfluous Y. This could be
just a convenience for inscribing words quicker rather than indicative of
some standard spelling which would extend to manuscript writing/copying
also.
