Old English orthography was standardised to a large degree before the
Norman conquest. Greek orthography was standardised enough that we
often cannot tell where a Greek document was written just by looking at
the spelling. That applies also to linear B Greek. Standard usage
seems to have been taught in schools ever since there were schools.
That there were periods when spelling became more chaotic does not
change the fact that in many periods there was a remarkable degree of
standardization given the conditions under which scribes worked.
