Kevin Riley asked: "... how widespread is this confusion of tet and taw? Is
tet no longer pronounced as a velarised /t/?"

Technically, there is a distinction which can be made between taw and teth,
even though most don't bother today. Taw is just like your average 't' sound
in English. Taw is a more sudden burst of sound made with the tongue hard up
against the teeth and with less voice. Teth is what's known as a 'dental
plosive', which means that if you pronounce it correctly, your teeth with
explode.

So beware!
