CASUAL VIKING
http://www.myspace.com/casualviking
Casual Viking have played raw, sinister rock & roll with an ample
sense of humor since they formed as a three-piece in late 2004. Forced
into hiatus for much of '07 by the loss of a rehearsal space, the band
returned this year with all-new material, a fourth member, and a
line-up shift that put its drummer behind a keyboard and made a
drummer of its bassist. An audience member at their first show
recently was overheard referring to their sound as "spy-rock", a
description they would not bother to argue with. However, Casual
Viking remain split on their opinion about the taste of coconut.

CERTAIN GENERAL
http://g150.home.mindspring.com/cg/
Certain General, one of the most overlooked and underrated groups to
emerge from the New York City post-punk era, release a retrospective
compilation called Certain General: Invisible New York on Easy Action
in September '07. The group, who have been called "the missing link
between Television and Sonic Youth" while attracting comparisons with
the Doors, Velvet Underground and Birthday Party, were formed in the
East Village in 1979 by singer-guitarist Parker DuLany and guitarist
Phil Gammage. Their brand of ravishing psychedelic mayhem stoked a
large following at clubs of the day like CBGBs, Hurrah, Peppermint
Lounge, the Mudd and the legendary Danceteria, where they were almost
house band. CG also supported visiting groups like R.E.M., New Order
and The Cure. Albums appeared on several labels, including some in
France where they became popular after touring Europe in the mid-80s.
But bad luck, tragedy and wrong career moves dogged their promising
career into near-obscurity before they reformed temporarily in 2003
precipitating a new phase of activity which included a track on the
second volume of Soul Jazz's New York Noise series.

WITCHTRIALZ (mems of Bunnydrums and Mose Giganticus)
http://www.myspace.com/witchtrialz
David Finzimer, guitar (PYRAMIDS)
Jeremy Klotz, drums (SENSORY FIX)
Marc Laurick, bass (BUNNYDRUMS, MOSE GIGANTICUS, SENSORY FIX)
'' ... the group was birthed in early '08 with an undeniable philly
underground pedigree: in addition to their respective tenures with
chemical imbalance and bunnydrums respectively, jeremy klotz and marc
laurick were once the barely legal rhythm section of philadelphia's
post-punk lost-boys, sensory fix, (a group that would also spawn tom
'vosco' adams of hardcore legends, ruin) sharing stages with bauhaus,
the fall and, on their final show, the stranglers ... in 1983 ... a
quarter-century on, the writing is compact, the lyrics strategically
oblique and, after their first 'off-the-radar' shows, the group were
already flatteringly pegged a 'wire/buzzcocks hybrid'. still,
witchtrialz! post-everything attack can generate an expansive wall of
sound live ... '
