The Slits: Ari Up, Viv Albertine, Tessa Pollitt, Palmolive. Compilation Producers: Steve Hammonds; John Reed; Nick Bourne. Liner Note Author: Don Letts. Recording information: Gibus Club, Paris, France (01/26/1978). LIVE AT THE GIBUS CLUB captures the Slits in raw, feral form, just after their career-making opening slot on the Clash's 1977 White Riot tour, and just before the release of their seminal 1979 debut CUT. While CUT is full of burbling, avant-funky rhythms (thanks, in large part, to reggae producer Dennis Bovell), and found the Slits trimmed down to a trio, LIVE AT THE GIBUS CLUB was recorded when the Slits were still a quartet, and a brash, guitar-heavy sound still dominated their performances. As rumor would have it, the Slits barely knew how to play their instruments when they formed and, given the ragged, primitive sound of this live set, those rumors might very well be true. But the Slits play with an urgency that fairly overwhelms, with Palmolive's powerhouse drumming, Viv Albertine's spiky shards of guitar, Tessa Pollitt's rumbling bass, and singer Ari Up's ululating caterwaul creating a visceral effect rivaled by few bands of their generation. Additionally, LIVE plays like one giant blueprint for the riot grrl rock of the '90s and 2000s, proving that the Slits sowed the seeds for everyone from Hole to Sleater-Kinney
