There's me assuming which is part of basesystem again. I swear it's part of
any
*sane* un*x system, but never mind. :) Hmm... I imagine testing without which
would be a whole lot funkier or slower, depending on method, and this is
something which may have to run every time a user opens another xterm. What
method of "checking which is installed" did you mean?

The exits I just put in to tidy up the code, it was initially coded without
them
but had some very deep nesting. I think exit is 'safe' in a sourced file, but
let me check... Ah! No they're not ok.
