Any user of kde4 will know that several thing depend on nepomuk, for semantic
tagging and search.

Nepomuk, in turn, depends on soprano, virtuoso, redland, raptor, rasqal and
libiodbc.

Altogether this makes quite a heavy dependency, and there have been many
complaints about run-time resource usage.
Many distros, and individual users have disabled this feature.
I have actually removed virtuoso.

In kde-4.13, nepomuk and friends are replaced by baloo, which is based on
xapian-core and offers much faster performance and fewer dependencies.

Nepomuk will provide a tool to migrate existing tags to the new baloo format.

Akonadi has already removed nepomuk and soprano usage, and now provides a
server search feature, which will be used by baloo.

Other parts of kde are in the process of removing nepomuk usage.

On my system, the current dependencies are as follows;

$ gzd soprano
akonadi:off:optional
calligra:off:optional
kdelibs:off:optional
kdepimlibs:on:required
nepomuk-core:on:required
nepomuk-widgets:on:required

$ gzd nepomuk-core
kactivities:off:optional
kdepimlibs:on:required
kdepim:on:required
kdepim-runtime:off:optional
kdeplasma-addons:off:optional
kde-workspace:off:optional
kget:off:optional
nepomuk-widgets:on:required

$ gzd akonadi
baloo:on:required
kdepimlibs:on:required
kdepim-runtime:on:required
kde-workspace:on:optional

$ gzd baloo
baloo-widgets:on:required
gwenview:on:optional
kde-baseapps:on:optional
kdepim:on:required
milou:on:required

So my questions are;

1. who actually uses the nepomuk features?

2. should we package the nepomuk -> baloo migration feature?

3. can we remove nepomuk and friends completely in kde-4.13, expected in
April?
